Botox Alternatives
Botox® treatments, in which a substance derived from the botulism toxin is injected into tiny areas, smooths out wrinkles by inducing paralysis of the underlying muscles. When the muscle can no longer contract, wrinkles become shallower. However, there are many drawbacks to using Botox® . It's expensive, painful and inconvenient, requiring regular visits to a dermatologist. It may take up to two weeks for results to be noticeable, and it wears off after three months, necessitating another injection. There is also the danger of having a drooping eyelid, which might last for months.
Two new products from Janson Beckett Cosmeceuticals offer an effective alternative to Botox® . alphaDerma CE is the basic product for use on face and neck, while DermaExcel 7 is a spot treatment for deeper wrinkles. Both contain the powerful peptide acetyl hexapeptide-ah3, also known as Argireline® . This substance blocks the signal sent to the muscles that causes them to contract. Here's how it works.
Repetitive muscle contractions leave a lingering tension in the muscles used to smile, frown, laugh or squint. This tension can keep the muscle contracted even when you're asleep. The contraction itself is triggered by exocytosis, the release of chemicals across a neuron's synapse. Rather than paralyzing the muscle itself, Argireline® interferes with this chemical reaction.
Argireline® works by substituting for a component of the exocytosis process, thus effectively blocking the neural impulse from reaching the muscle. The muscle is not paralyzed it simply fails to receive the chemical signal to contract. The result is a dramatic lessening of the depth of wrinkles, with no injections necessary.
